Premiere reads an image's actual format, not its filename. If it does not support that format, the import fails.
Common Causes at a Glance
| Cause | How to spot it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| WebP or AVIF | Saved from a website | Convert to PNG or JPEG |
| HEIC/HEIF photo | From an iPhone or recent Android | Convert to JPEG, or change the phone's camera format |
| SVG vector | Logo or icon from a website or design tool | Export a PNG |
| Wrong extension | .jpg or .png saved from a browser | Check the real format, then convert |
| CMYK color mode | Print-ready file from a designer | Convert to RGB |
| Image too large | Over 256 megapixels or 32,768 pixels wide | Resize before importing |
| Damaged download | Unusually small or will not preview | Download or export it again |
HEIC, WebP, and AVIF support varies with your Premiere Pro version and operating system. Converting is the reliable fix.
Step 1: Check What the File Really Is
A browser-saved file named photo.jpg can contain WebP data.
- Mac: open the image in Preview and choose Tools > Show Inspector; the General tab lists the format. Or select the file in Finder, choose File > Get Info, and check Kind.
- Windows: right-click the file, choose Properties, and check Type of file. If it looks right but still fails, save a new copy (below).
Renaming the extension does not convert the file. A WebP renamed to photo.png is still WebP inside.
Step 2: Convert the Image
Use PNG for images with transparency (logos, cutouts, UI screenshots) and JPEG for photos.
Mac
- One file: open it in Preview, choose File > Export, set Format to PNG or JPEG, and click Save.
- Several files: select them in Finder, right-click, choose Quick Actions > Convert Image, pick PNG or JPEG and a size, and click Convert.
Windows
Open the image in Paint or Photos, choose File > Save as (Paint) or Save as (Photos), and pick PNG or JPEG.
If Windows cannot open a HEIC or WebP file, install Microsoft's free HEIF Image Extensions or WebP Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store.
SVG Logos
Premiere does not import SVG files as vectors. Export a PNG from Illustrator, Figma, or Affinity Designer at least as large as you will show it: 3840 pixels wide or more for a full-frame logo in a 4K sequence.
CMYK Images
Premiere works in RGB, so CMYK print files may fail to import or show wrong colors. Change the color mode to RGB in Photoshop or another image editor and save a new copy.
Step 3: Import or Replace
- New image: choose File > Import, or drag it into the Project panel.
- Offline image already in the project: right-click it in the Project panel, choose Replace Footage, and select the converted file. Timeline clips update.
Keep converted files in your project folder. See how to organize Premiere Pro images, folders, and bins.
Avoid the Problem When Collecting Web Images
Most format errors start with "Save Image As" in a browser.
- Check the format in the save dialog. If it is WebP or AVIF, convert after saving.
- Copy the image instead. Copying places pixel data on the clipboard rather than the original web file. Clipboard It saves that clipboard image as a file Premiere can import, names it, and adds it to your chosen bin, which skips the save, convert, and import steps. Supported clipboard formats depend on the source app and operating system.
Still Not Importing?
- Import a known-good PNG. If that also fails, the problem is Premiere or the project, not the image.
- Adobe lists a maximum of 256 megapixels, and no more than 32,768 pixels in either direction, even for supported formats. Resize panoramas and large scans first. See Adobe's still-image import guide.
- Move the file to a local drive with a short path. Network drives and on-demand cloud folders can interrupt imports.
- Restart Premiere after installing new codecs or system image extensions.
